At Surge Soccer, we believe in the transformative power of sports—not just as a game but as a ministry that can change lives and communities. Our commitment to this vision has led us to establish the Liberia Internship Program, a unique initiative designed to equip the next generation of sports ministers with the skills, knowledge, and spiritual foundation they need to make a lasting impact. This program is a critical part of our mission in Liberia, where the need for leadership, mentorship, and positive role models is more urgent than ever.
The Liberia Internship Program was born out of our deepening involvement in the country. After our initial visits, it became clear that Liberia, a nation still recovering from years of civil conflict, needed more than just temporary relief efforts. It needed a sustainable approach to leadership development—one that would empower young Liberians to take charge of their futures and lead their communities toward healing and growth. With this in mind, we launched the internship program, focusing on developing young leaders who could use soccer as a platform for ministry and community transformation.
Currently, our program includes five young Liberians, each with a unique story and a shared passion for making a difference. These interns are not just learning the technical aspects of soccer coaching; they are being trained in holistic ministry. This means they are gaining valuable skills in leadership, discipleship, community engagement, and trauma healing—skills that are essential in a country where many still bear the scars of war, both physically and emotionally.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Liberia Internship Program is seeing how these young leaders grow and develop during their time with us. Take, for example, the story of Winifred, one of our interns who has become a shining example of what this program can achieve. Winifred came into the program with a heart for helping others, and through her time with Surge Soccer, she has honed her skills and deepened her commitment to ministry. Today, she is not only a capable soccer coach but also a community leader with a vision for opening a pregnancy center in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital. Her journey is a testament to the power of mentorship and the impact of holistic training.
The impact of the Liberia Internship Program extends beyond the individual interns. As these young leaders return to their communities, they bring with them the skills and vision to initiate change. They are starting soccer programs in schools, leading youth groups, and using their platform to address issues such as education, health, and social justice. In a country where over half the population is under the age of 16, these young leaders are stepping into a critical role, providing guidance and hope to a generation that has often been overlooked.
Our goal is to continue expanding the Liberia Internship Program, bringing in more young people and equipping them to be leaders in their communities. But we can’t do it alone. We need the support of partners who share our vision and are willing to invest in the future of Liberia. Whether through financial contributions, volunteering, or prayer, there are many ways to support this vital program.
As we look to the future, we are filled with hope and anticipation. The Liberia Internship Program is more than just a training initiative—it is a movement that is raising up a new generation of leaders who will carry the torch of faith, hope, and love into their communities. These young men and women are the future of Liberia, and with your help, we can ensure that they have the tools they need to succeed. Join us in this mission and be a part of the change that is transforming lives through the power of sports ministry.
