Dave Irby Co-Authors first of its kind University textbook and heads back to Africa to help develop soccer at all levels

Dave Irby burst onto the Salem area soccer scene as the Cascade Surge Head Coach back in 1997. Along the way he coached soccer at: Salem United, Keizer Soccer Club, Blanchet Catholic High Scho0l and Corban University.

While not seen on the local soccer scene in a number of years Irby has crisscrossed the globe to multiple countries helping with soccer development.

Training coaches in grassroots soccer in Ecuador and now preparing for his fourth trip to Liberia to help with the development of soccer at all levels: grassroots, academy and youth national teams; with an emphasis on leadership training.

“Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world, devastated by two civil wars ebola and covid, we see connecting through soccer as a way to develop the next generation of leaders, assist in education development and in healing from trauma.”

Irby has also authored three books: Undefeated; Sammy Surge in Study Hard, Play Fair, Help Others, a children’s book based on the 

surge’s mascot; and a university textbook for Human Kinetics – SPORTS MINISTRY. The later was published last year and was used as the textbook for courses at three Christian universities.

A US Soccer Federation ‘A’ Licensed Coach with a Master’s Degree in Teaching Irby is grateful he can use his credentials and passions to make a small impact on the world.
