Charity Soccer Match For Orphans In Mexico A Success!

It was supposed to be a a one day soccer event for the orphans but Susie Irby, wife of Surge Founder Dave Irby saw so many needs that day in Tecate, Mexico that a week later she hopped into her car, strapped Nathan in his infant car seat, loaded up the car with groceries and headed back to Mexico; thus beginning what has amounted to a 24 year (and counting) endearing partnership with the Rancho San Juan Bosco Orphanage.

This past Saturday sixteen soccer players (and a few wives) headed across the California-Mexico border to play in the annual over-55 Orphanage Charity Soccer Match. Frank and Jorge flew in from Portland, Oregon and Gary from Dallas, Texas.

The Surge team won for the first time in eight years but more important was the $3,200 raised for the orphanage to help supply them with meat to eat on Sundays.

[tds_note]A Big Thanks to all of you who joined us Saturday in Tecate! Sorry to those who couldn’t make it! Once all the money is in we should have over $3,000 for “Taco Sundays” …the kids are very exited about getting to eat meat, which doesn’t happen very often. Now we are working on a plan to build 4-8 rental apartments on the orphanage property so they can have some some sustainable income for the future. We will keep you updated on plans for the building project and next year’s Charity Match![/tds_note]

More events are planned including a building project.  If you would like to participate contact us at: dirby@surgesoccer.org
